try to be helpful in finding appropriate solutions. 10 years at school is quite
a long term. For all people it may be the brightest period of their life as
well as school friends sometimes remain our best friends forever.
The first romantic feelings, our first love- they are also associated with school
years, aren’t they? - Share your problems and experiences with us, tell
us your stories and jokes, send us your poems, photos and pictures- everything
you find interesting, valuable, important or instructive. We would really appreciate
teachers and parents participation in our project.
We’ll try to answer all your letters.

Short description of the project: to collect and to analyze as much interesting
information about the water as possible. To define the properties of water and
make a qualitative analysis of the Dnipro and other rivers water (spring water,
water-pipe water, mineral water etc.)
Full description of the project: the work is done in some route or directions
across the country Water Dipolar of its Majesty the Dnipro river. At the fires
stage the retinue of its Majesty the Dnipro makes up a map of the journey. To
succeed in it all participants have to be registered: they may send their photos
(if they wish), a picture or a photo connected with the topic of the discussion
–Water, some interesting questions about it, about the Dnipro. To be registered
participants also take special names they want and decide what persons from
the kingdom they would like to meet. This stage lasts one month.
At the second stage water Dipolar together with his assistants chooses the most
interesting questions of the participants of the journey. Participants are given
one week to answer the complex of the questions (2-3). The assistants and retinues
of Water Dipolar work with the answers and define the best and the most original
of them. The second journey takes 1-2 months.
The third direction is devoted to studying chemical properties of water. Dipolar
and his assistants conduct practical lessons and then discuss the results of
the work. The third stage lasts 2-3 weeks.
The fourth route is the most exciting, the longest, the most difficult and the
most dangerous. The travelers make a qualitative analysis of the Dnipro water
and some other water. This journey lasts 3 months.
At the last stage Dipolar and his assistants sum up the results and put them
into the web site.
Ages: 12-13 years and older
Term of work of the project: one year.
Expected results: journey to the country of Water Dipolar, its Majesty the Dnipro
and getting as much useful information as possible.
Importance of the project for other people: in spite of the fact that there
is a lot of water on the Earth, it’s too little. It’s obvious why
a lot: there are oceans, glaciers, rivers and rains. Why little? – Because
mankind spoils more water than it can purify, because the bigger part of water
on the planet is not water but a salt solution.
There is a saying: “We live on a powder keg, water is a delayed-action
bomb”. So each of us has to do all he can to prevent this bomb from exploding
– we must spare pure water, cherish it as our treasure, avert the danger
of water pollution.
Ancient Romans found it rather difficult to use beautiful words when expressing
well-known things. In our project we’ll try to do just the same when systematizing
known properties of water, investigating the state of the Dnipro basin, the
river which is the main source of fresh water for a lot of people, who live
on it’ banks.

Attention! Attention!
All who are curious, witty, persistent and not indifferent are invited to participate
in creative activities – to take part in our new telecommunicate project.
The subject for discussion has been dear and interesting to you since childhood.
In hot sunny days you enjoyed the freshness of a lake, a river or a rivulet.
When you grew up you heard from older people how these rivers and lakes got
their names. The legends were romantic and sad, interesting and exciting. And
though sometimes “the name exists but there is no river any more”
(as Ukrainian poetess Lina Kostenko wrote), the story of its origin is unique,
it goes back to remote ages of the history and there are no indifferent to it.
In a modest name, in a native dear word
We feel the ages’ depth,
Our forefathers teach us
How to love and honor ancient times.
Dmytro Bilos.
So, we invite all those who wish and are not indifferent – teachers and
students - to participate in creative activities and
To say a word about the native land
Sparing no efforts
And caring about popular science style
Dmytro Bilos.

of hydronyms’ names in your land with the help of old-residents and investigation
studies of special literature from various sources all the participants send
their stories, legends about the names of the rivers, lakes, springs and streams.
Tell about the unique tales connected with these names in your native land and
your creative work find will discover the essence of well known strangers from
the Hydrosphere country, those which are near us but we seldom think about the
meanings of their names, origin, components they consist of, their background
– roots of ancient times, historic past or people fortunes and mode of
life. It’s necessary to indicate the source of information (old-residents,
archives, special reference literature). If the legend was written from an old-resident’s
words give his first name, patronymic and surname, date of birth and address.

What are laws of life?
This is the code of rules and principles people follow during their life
There are a lot of such rules some of them being so natural and clear that practically
everybody agree with them. In all cultures and societies honesty and politeness
are highly honored. If each of us always follows these rules it will be good
for all and will make our world better.
So what is this project about?
The main aim of the project “Laws of life” is to make students realize
the importance of existing laws and give the opportunity to explain how they
understand the things that are of great value for them and are the most significant
in their life.
How to take part in the project?
Send your compositions to the file named “Laws of life” at the address:
http://www.e-ukraine.org/subsites/iearn/.

4. Annual I*EARN Conference summing up the results of the project.
This project is the continuation of the project “Foreign public figures
in the names of streets and squares of your town”.
A lot of participants studied the names of streets in their towns and found
out that the history and interrelations of different cultures are reflected
not only in these names.
We for example have the Polish cemetery, the Korean center and a French bakery
in our town. And each of these places reflects the history if these countries
in its own way. May be there are places connected with history, culture or mode
of life of other people in your town too.
1. Name of the project:”A foreign corner in your town”.
2. Short description of the project: In all towns there are places connected
with foreign history, culture, life of famous foreigners or places that were
named after them. It will be also very exciting to get to know that somewhere
in the world there is a corner connected with your country. And this fact will
help you to look at yourself from quite a new point of view. So let’s
tell each other stories about such “foreign places” for us to realize
that we all are related on the Earth.
3. Full description of the project: participants send descriptions of the places
(streets, a building or a monument) connected with a foreign country. You can
supply your stories with photos.

Name of the project: “For whom bell tolls ” or if our hat is apart?
We, Ukrainians have a saying, which can be rendered in such a way: ”I
live in the outskirts, i.e. - my house stands apart; so I can stand apart too”
(read it as a pun). That is, - some people think that it’s quite all right
not to care about the things, which are not of your personal concern. Fortunately
acts of terrorism actions are rare in Ukraine. More often we get to know about
them from TV or newspapers. But can it be considered as “not our business”?
Don’t we really care about those horrible events that happen in the world?
Are we able to support people who lose their lives perishing so unfairly? Can
we express our sympathy with those who suffer from terrorism?
An outstanding American writer Earnest Hemingway wrote a famous anti war novel
“For whom does the bell ring?” about the war in Spain, which became
an event in his own life too. The epigraph of the novel is John Don’s
words: “Every man can’t be as an island – one by himself.
Every man is a part of the mainland… death of every man makes my life
shorter too, as I am a part of the whole world. So don’t ask for whom
the bell rings. It rings for you.”
We Ukrainians think that the events of September 11 shocked the whole world,
not only America; they are of our concern too…
The main idea of the project: telecommunicate project will have two parts. Students
and teachers from Ukraine and the USA will take part in it.
Teachers are suggested to write and send descriptions of the lessons or parts
of the lessons devoted to antiterrorism, methodic workouts. They can also send
descriptions of out –of –school activities.
Teachers of Civil education, foreign literature, English, class teachers and
all who care are invited to participate.
Students express their feelings, thoughts and ideas and send their works on
the web site of the project, as well as to Polytechnic Preparatory Country Day
School in New-York.
American students print these works and design them as bells, to be attached
to the gates of St. Paul’s Church in New-York, near the memorial to the
victims of the terrorist act of September 11, where now you can see letters
from all over the world.
Ages or grades of participants: teachers and senior students.
Dates: October 2002 – September 11, 2003.
Expected results: interactive web site, collected essays and methodic workouts.
